Jesus – A Brief History
Jesus, aka Jesus of Nazareth, aka The Son of God, aka The Lamb, aka a few other things to different people is rumoured to have been born roughly 2006 years ago. His mother, The Virgin Mary, is said to have had an “immaculate conception” or, in other words, impregnated by the spirit of God without, er, damaging the goods. Jesus’s father, Joseph, was a carpenter who doesn’t really get the respect he deserves for raising the Son of God.
In Christianity, Jesus is referred to as “Jesus Christ” although that is not his proper name. The name Jesus is actually the Greek for “Yeshua,” which is Hebrew for Joshua. The word Christ is Hebrew for “Messiah” which in Greek would be translated as “annointed.”
Basically (and I’m summarizing here) Jesus was a rabbi that started performing miracles and raising people from the dead. He told those that would listen that he was the Son of God and the Romans (who were in power at the time) got kind of angry at that because they believed that there was no other god than Caesar. A close friend and Apostle of Jesus, Judas Iscariot, sold Jesus out to the local governor-type, Pontius Pilate. Pilate tortured Jesus a bit and then nailed him to a cross where he died. It is said that Jesus rose from the grave a few days later and then went back to Heaven to kick it with his dad.
